On 16th April 2026, we had the pleasure of hosting a really enjoyable morning event in partnership with Sevenoaks Chamber of Commerce at The Spa Hotel in Tunbridge Wells. It was one of those sessions that felt less like a formal business agenda and more like a shared conversation over coffee, with plenty of reflection, insight, and genuine connection throughout.
We welcomed over 50 guests to the Sevenoaks Chamber Event at The Spa hotel from across the local business community, including representatives from Cooper Burnett, My Sevenoaks Community, Thackray Williams, and many other organisations. The room had a warm, engaged atmosphere from the outset, with conversations flowing easily as people arrived and settled in. That sense of openness carried through the entire morning.
Rather than focusing on structured presentations or technical themes, the session centred around experience, perspective, and people. Jo opened the discussion by taking us back to 1998, sharing personal stories and reflections from her early career. These weren’t rehearsed business anecdotes, but honest recollections of what work and business life looked like at the time.
There was something particularly engaging about hearing those stories in that setting. It sparked a lot of recognition in the room, not just in terms of how different things were then, but also in how familiar some of the underlying experiences still feel today. While the tools, environments, and expectations have changed significantly since 1998, many of the human elements of business remain constant. Relationships, trust, communication, and resilience still sit at the heart of how organisations operate.

Jo’s reflections created a strong foundation for the conversation that followed, grounding everything in real-world experience rather than abstract ideas. Richard then built on that by sharing his perspective on business growth and, just as importantly, on the importance of building and maintaining a positive workforce. His focus was not simply on scaling organisations, but on how that growth is supported internally through culture, leadership, and clarity of purpose.
A key message that came through clearly at the Sevenoaks Chamber Event at The Spa hotel was that growth is not just a numbers exercise. While revenue, headcount, and expansion are often used as indicators of success, they do not tell the full story. Sustainable growth, as Richard highlighted, depends heavily on the strength of the internal environment. Teams need to feel supported, aligned, and valued if they are going to deliver consistently under increasing pressure. He also spoke about the importance of intentional leadership in shaping workplace culture. As organisations grow, the risk of disconnect increases. Without deliberate focus on communication, positivity and wellbeing, it becomes easier for teams to drift away from a shared sense of purpose. Creating a positive workforce, therefore, is not something that happens by default; it requires ongoing attention and care.

What made the morning particularly valuable was how naturally these two perspectives complemented each other. Jo’s reflections from 1998 provided a reminder of where many of us have come from, while Richard’s insights encouraged us to think more deliberately about where we are heading. Together, they created a narrative that felt grounded, relatable, and forward-looking at the same time.
There was also a strong sense of participation from those in attendance. Rather than a one-way delivery of content, the session developed into a shared discussion, with attendees contributing their own experiences and viewpoints. That openness added real depth to the conversation and helped bring the themes to life in a practical way.
Across the room, similar topics kept emerging. How do businesses grow without losing their culture? How do you maintain positivity and engagement within teams during periods of change? How do leaders balance operational demands with the human side of business? These are questions that many organisations are grappling with, regardless of size or sector.

The setting for Sevenoaks Chamber Event at The Spa hotel in Tunbridge Wells provided an ideal environment for this type of discussion. Its calm and professional atmosphere helped create space for reflection and meaningful conversation, rather than a rushed or transactional feel. That slower pace suited the tone of the morning perfectly.
One of the most positive aspects of the event was the quality of networking. With over 50 guests in attendance, there was a real opportunity for connections to form between people and organisations who may not have otherwise crossed paths. Those informal conversations before and after the session added an important layer of value, reinforcing the sense of community within the room.
Looking back, the morning served as a reminder that while business continues to evolve, the fundamentals remain consistent. Technology, markets, and working practices may change, but people are still at the centre of everything. How organisations support their teams, how leaders share their vision, and how experiences are exchanged all continue to shape outcomes in a meaningful way.
Jo’s stories and Richard’s perspective on growth and positive workforce culture brought that message into focus in a simple but effective way. Different viewpoints, different experiences, but a shared understanding of what matters most. It was an inspiring, engaging morning at the Sevenoaks Chamber Event at The Spa that left many of us reflecting on both the journey so far and the direction ahead. Plus, the importance of building businesses that are not only successful, but also positive places for people to work and grow.
