Supporting resilient connectivity across UK energy centres

A renewable energy organisation operates energy centres across the UK, including solar and water-based sites where reliable connectivity is important for collecting and tracking sustainable energy data.

With sites distributed across different locations, the organisation needed a practical connectivity model that could support remote operations and reduce reliance on a single connection. It also needed a simpler way for UK callers to reach its emergency contact line, even when the relevant support teams were based overseas.

Active Digital delivered a combined connectivity and voice solution. This included Starlink with SIM-based failover across around 15 energy centres, alongside inbound call routing that presents a UK number and routes calls to teams in Norway or the Netherlands.

Our Solution

We developed a connectivity approach suited to a distributed estate of remote energy sites, where traditional fixed connectivity may not always be the most practical option.

Starlink provides the primary satellite connectivity solution at the energy centres, with SIM-based failover providing an additional route if the primary service is unavailable. This supports the continued flow of data from sites used to track sustainable energy performance and client metrics.

Alongside site connectivity, Active Digital also configured inbound call routing for the organisation’s emergency contact number. UK callers can dial a UK number, with calls routed to the appropriate overseas support team in Norway or the Netherlands.

The solution includes:

Starlink connectivity across around 15 UK energy centres
SIM-based failover to provide an additional connectivity route
Connectivity designed for solar and water-based sites
Support for sustainable energy data and metric tracking
Inbound call routing from a UK number to teams in Norway or the Netherlands
A more accessible UK contact route for emergency calls

The challenge

The renewable energy organisation needed reliable connectivity across a dispersed estate of UK energy centres.

These sites support the collection and tracking of sustainable energy data and client metrics. A loss of connectivity could affect the visibility of site information and place additional pressure on operational teams.

The organisation also needed to make its emergency contact process clearer for UK callers. Its existing emergency number was not a UK number, while the teams responsible for receiving calls were based in Norway and the Netherlands.

The organisation needed support with:

  • Connectivity for around 15 distributed energy centres
  • A practical solution for remote solar and water-based sites
  • An additional connectivity route to support resilience
  • Ongoing access to sustainable energy data and metrics
  • A UK-facing contact number for emergency calls
  • Call routing to international support teams

The outcome

The organisation now has a more resilient connectivity model across around 15 UK energy centres.

Starlink and SIM-based failover provide the sites with primary and secondary connectivity options, supporting the continued collection and tracking of sustainable energy data. This gives the organisation a more consistent approach across its distributed estate, while supporting the information it provides to clients.

The inbound call-routing solution has also created a simpler contact experience for UK callers. Rather than dialling a non-UK emergency number, callers can use a UK number that routes to the appropriate team in Norway or the Netherlands.

The partnership has delivered:

  • Starlink connectivity across around 15 UK energy centres
  • SIM-based failover to support site resilience
  • Connectivity suited to remote solar and water-based locations
  • Continued support for sustainable energy data tracking
  • A UK emergency contact number for easier inbound calling
  • International call routing to support teams in Norway and the Netherlands
