Active Digital brand ambassador, Jade Jones MBE and proud customer, recently sat down with our CEO Richard Groves in her hometown of Flint, North Wales. They talked about her career, moving from Taekwondo to Boxing, over coffee and discussed her most recent move into the sport. Jade seems to have settled in well with that fighting family and is currently preparing for her planned debut in September. Jade acknowledges that boxing is a different sport from taekwondo, stating, “I’ve learned straight away it’s not like being Rocky,” according to the BBC.
She notes the importance of technique, timing, and patience, rather than just relying on brute force. Furthermore, Jade said she’s motivated by the challenge and the opportunity to push herself beyond her limits. Jade said in a former interview with the BBC that she has faced a huge culture shock as she has learned about the “sweet science” of boxing. “Boxing is arguably the hardest sport in the world, but I am up for the challenge. I want to give it a go,” she said.
Jade Jones became the youngest Team GB Olympic gold medallist when she sensationally won gold at her first attempt, as a 19-year-old at the 2012 London Games and held on to her crown four years later in Rio de Janeiro. She best known for winning gold in the women’s 57kg category at both the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, as well as being the 2019 world champion and a three-time European champion in the discipline.
Discussing her move to the sport with Richard, she said, “It’s exciting. I am from a kicking-based martial arts. It’s tough that you are used to being the best of the best. Being the top dog in your sport, everyone knows who you are. Now with boxing, I get to go in there sparring and fighting, I don’t know how far I can take it.”
“I think I just needed a new challenge,” Jones says of why she made the decision to switch sports. “I watched boxing, and I always thought that I could be good at it. I am now at that time of my life. Taekwondo is a young person’s sport, but I am not finished with professional sports yet. Boxing just excites me. It’s a new challenge. There is a lot more about it. The weigh-ins, and all the circus that comes with it. I am quite interested in all of that.”
There are only 13 active featherweights in Britain and Jade will be an excellent addition. She will also do some damage if she learns the basics – too many female fighters never bother to get an education and that is why the gulf at the top is so wide. Jones can bridge that gap. As a loyal, long term Active Digital customer, Richard hand delivered Jade a new iPhone 16 device as part of her ambassadorial partnership with us.
We wish Jade all the best as she begins this new chapter as a boxer and ends a glorious career as a taekwondo athlete. We hope Jones can look back at her taekwondo career with pride and whatever the future, we know Jade is a born fighter. We can’t wait to see how her boxing career progresses! All the team at Active Digital are right behind you Jade!
Her journey into boxing is not just about competition, but about embracing change, resilience, and self-discovery. With the same determination that made her a double Olympic champion, Jade is stepping into the ring ready for whatever comes next—showing that true champions never stop seeking new challenges.
