Female Entrepreneurship – what’s it really like?

As it turned out we had a lot to talk about! The juggle of running a business and parenthood is something many of us can relate to. Both of which are full time jobs! With current statistics showing that women make up only a third of all entrepreneurs in the UK conversations like these are needed more than ever to encourage and support women in business.

MICRO SCOOTERS

Anna Gibson and Philippa Gogarty are the founders of Micro Scooters UK. 15 years ago Anna Gibson and Philippa Gogarty co-founders of Micro Scooters UK were about to embark on the school run with fractious toddlers in tow and stress levels going through the roof. An afternoon spent in the park in Clapham Common, Anna spotted a young child on a Mini Micro scooter.  Her son, Edward asked to have a go and wouldn’t get off.  It was then that Anna knew she was on to something. Shortly afterwards she teamed up with her friend Philippa Gogarty (they first met at the baby clinic when they were both taking their sons for their check-up) and set about bringing the remarkable Mini Micro scooter to the UK. Scoot forward over a decade and the school run is unrecognisable.  Now over 2 million children scoot the school run every day.  More recently their parents are getting in on the act too.  Adults using scooters to do the school run, the commute or for weekend family adventures is on the increase. Microscooters passionately believe everyone is entitled to a scooter as we know from experience the transformational impact it can have on everyday lives.  Getting from A-B is quicker, healthier and greener.

As the number 1 scooter brand in the UK, Microscooters are making it their mission to encourage more journeys by scooter.  For children who are just learning to walk to commuters who want to halve their journey times and everyone in between.  We are dedicated to providing scooters that will last a lifetime.

LITTLE BIRD

Sarah and Naomi, who also started off as friends, launched LittleBird in 2011. They say that it has been a challenging eight years in business, full of highs and lows. An exciting and constantly evolving journey, the juggle of parenthood and running your own business is a challenging one. But, I think we can all agree, there is much to celebrate too.

LittleBird is a one stop shop for families looking for the best things to do, see and buy together. Their mission is to make family life easier, more affordable and more fun. They have hand-pick family days out, theatre shows, events, activities, products, family breaks, parties, education tools and more. It’s a brilliant website and both Naomi and Sarah, should be very proud of the online business they have created. For more information, visit www.littlebird.co.uk

Thank you to Anna, Philippa, Naomi and Sarah for all taking part in this discussion to celebrate International Women’s Day 2019. This year’s theme is ‘Balance for Better’, because we all know that a balanced world is a better world. Celebrate women’s achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality.
