EasyJet embraces augmented reality technology for bag scanning on iPhone

With budget airlines frequently changing their permitted hand luggage allowances, it can be difficult to be sure your bag will be accepted as hand luggage once you arrive at the airport.

To help alleviate the confusion, EasyJet has launched a new feature on their iPhone app, allowing travellers to scan and measure their hand luggage from the comfort of their own home, avoiding any last-minute panics at the check-in desk.

The new feature uses Apple’s ARKit 2 technology and the phone’s camera to accurately scan and measure the bag to confirm whether it’s a permittable size for hand luggage.

EasyJet currently allows bags measuring 56cm x 45cm x 25cm as hand luggage. Bags any larger than this can be accepted in the hold for an additional charge.

EasyJet’s Head of Digital Experience, Daniel Young commented:

“We are constantly on the search for ways to improve the travel experience we offer our customers when flying with us and this new technology is a perfect example of that.

“We continue to place innovation at the heart of our industry-leading mobile travel app to give our customers the tools they need to take stress away from the airport experience. Embracing this latest technology makes preparing for travel easy and fun.”

Here at Active Digital, we’re excited to see brands such as EasyJet embracing new technology to continually improve customer digital experience.
